  • Clear and cold (-3C), frost on the ground, no wind, dry.
  • 475 Yards, 4 turns.

  • A less slow start, but once she was on the track, she never picked her nose up and she never stopped working. She never looked better.
  • She was on the course for just under 5 minutes.

11/9/2008 TDX Test at Monrovia MD @ The Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club
  • Judged by Rosemary Janoch and Sue Ammerman.
  • Sunny, cool (16° C) and very windy. The cover was very short, no chance of seeing the track.
  • She was assigned the third (last) track, since she was still in heat.
  • She did her typical slow start. After crossing the start flag, she casted the full 180° and wanted to go upwind, which was not legal. She never got the scent of the first leg off the start flag, in spite of me rescenting her with the start article.
  • The spectators thought it was from her being in heat, they were likely right.
  • After we were whistled off, I declined to take her through the course. I did not want to end up doing all of the work keeping her on-track, then rewarding her for making it to the end. I’m hoping she figures out that she has to do all of the work if she expects to get a reward.
  • One of the judges recommended just working starts the next time out, I plan to do that.

11/2/2008 TDX Test at Eighty Four, PA @ The Golden Triangle Dog Training Club
  • Judged by Sandy Roth and Lily Mummert.
  • Cloudy, cool and dry. No wind at all.
  • 830 yards/6 turns.
  • The grass was thick but short. The hills were very steep. I forgot my boots, but that was OK. Carrying the extra weight up those hills would have been difficult.
  • She started slow, even sat in front of me. The first leg went right uphill, causing her to walk slowly.
  • She hit the first turn, but got caught on a furrow on the second leg at A. I stopped her the first time, but she went back to it and seemed to be convinced. I had to trust her, but she was off track.
  • She finished the course, but went off again at the first set of cross-tracks and at B, which had 2 furrows from vehicle traffic.
  • Otherwise, she found all of the articles.
  • No problems through the woods. They were short segments with a few jaggers to make it interesting. Nothing like what we’ve been practicing in.

9/26/2008 TDX Test at Fair Hills, MD @ The West Highland White Terrier Nationals
  • Judged by Michelle Gillette and Ron Seeley.
  • It had rained for 2 days before the test. It was very overcast the whole day. We ran into rain on the way to the test. Couldn’t ask for more. J
  • The conditions were great test morning, right up until we started out for the track. Then the clouds gave way to sunlight and the heat combined with the humidity to make it very hot, all of a sudden. I gave her water several times on course and she seemed to get through that OK.
  • Good stuff: Got all of the articles. Did not get pulled off by the cross-tracks, sniffed them, then got right back onto the main track.
  • Another slow start. She tried to pull me off about 2 steps onto the course, once at the first turn and once again at the first article.
  • I almost got called for guiding when she pulled me off at the start, I tried to hold my ground, but ended up pulling her back. The judge warned me afterward that they could have blown the whistle.
  • It’s obvious that she depends on me to keep her on the track and this needs to change. Once she got into the woods and I couldn’t see the track, she missed the first turn and got whistled down. The judges continued her through the woods, but she needed their help several times until getting back in the field.
  • It didn’t help that I started running. Once she got onto the slick, wet surface under the trees, I was worried about falling while I was holding her back. So, I started letting her run, which allowed her to go her own way.

  • I need to go back to some random food drops to motivate her to stay on course. Also, I’ve got to make her do the work. And when she doesn’t, she won’t get rewarded.

4/6/2008 TDX Test at Hudson Valley Tracking Club
  • Judged by Peter Hewitt and Ray Desmarais.
  • Steady wind from NNE, very short grass, somewhat dry, cool. Spring growing has begun so the conditions were tough.
  • We approached the start at almost a right angle. She started down the correct leg, stopped at the end of the lead, turned around and came back. She muddled around the start some more, then took off down the opposite direction-the way the tracklayer came in to the start flag. The judges were not standing together, so I couldn’t tell that the direction she picked was not legal.
