TD Certification Attempt
9/20/2009 at Solberg Airport
  • She didn't certify today, but I was pretty happy with what I saw. I've been setting my own tracks, so I didn't have a good feel going in as to where she really is. She had a good solid start, even indicated the article, took the first leg just fine. I could see where the first leg ended, so when she overshot the first turn, I stopped her. At first, I didn't see where the second leg went. She went left and I could then see that the turn was 90 degrees left. She went around me a bit, but once she got onto it, she was solid on the second leg.
  • Then she overshot the second turn. I knew the third leg went right, but I wasn't sure where. She managed to work herself back and found the track, which I was quite psyched about. The third leg was also very solid, but she again overshot the third turn. This time, we were over the hill from the gallery and she went too far to reasonably work her way back. Had the gallery convinced she was going to nail it. :-)
  • When we were whistled off and were completing the last 2 legs, she had much more trouble on those two legs. Up to now, the grass was perfect-8 inches deep, still wet, pretty easy to see the track. On the last 2 legs, there were a whole bunch of tractor tire ruts going diagonally across the track and she wanted to follow those. So , if she hadn't missed turn 3, she might have gone off, anyway.
  • The field conditions were great, we were track #2, ran around 9AM. Cold (10°C), no wind, but very sunny. Overall, I was happy with her work and I know she needs to work on turns and cross-ruts.
  • The other two tracks in the same area as mine had the same problem with tire ruts. Only one airplane went over us while we were on course and neither of us had a problem with it.
  • Only 2 of 8 passed today. There should have been more, since other than the ruts, the conditions were good. Even the bright sun was not so bad.
